About (semi) official I2P forums

Post by lgillis »

The first forum was forum.i2p. It was set up in the early days of I2P, which emerged from the Invisible IRC Project (IIP). The Wayback Machine has records of the forum dating back to 2004. It was probably created in the same period as the original I2P homepage under the address i2p.net, in April/May 2004.
The open forum was the original exchange forum for users and developers. It was intended as a space for suggestions for improvement, discussions and assistance - but it also became a popular place for complaining. Initially, the usual more or less obvious software errors were complained about. Later, the forum was also used to draw attention to content-related grievances. For example, valid arguments were used to remove the generally popular postman tracker from the Java router homepage. This was followed by more difficult topics, such as the question of how to deal with human rights. In the absence of binding rules for administrators, the moderation of participants, especially of critical contributions, was arbitrary and hidden and was neither comprehensible to participants nor contradictory to the terms of the contract: "Whatever you do or write in here....it's not my fault or my problem (but that doesn't mean I don't care)." (forum.i2p: Registration Agreement Terms). As a consequence, it happened more and more often that those who drew attention to grievances were fought against. Individual posts and sometimes entire threads were removed because it was feared that the issues raised could damage I2P's reputation.
The forum was initially accessible both via I2P and from the Internet, initially at forum.i2p.net and later at forum.i2p2.de. The open Internet access via forum.i2p2.de has since been closed by the operator due to alleged attacks. On April 24, 2017, forum.i2p was finally taken offline.

Errata: In the first version I had entered the date 2008 instead of 2004, because I had already forgotten the renaming and Wayback treats the history separately. I have added links, so you should be able to research the history of I2P to some extent.

The second forum was created under the address forums.i2p. After forum.i2p repeatedly went down and complaints about it increased, I2P Forums was opened in parallel as an alternative user forum at the beginning of 2015 (ca. 17.2. 2015). This was also a privately operated forum by an individual.

The forum software was newer and the colors – blue-grey, the standard colors of the time – looked fresher. The forum structure was also adopted, but all posts from the previous forum were missing and participants had to start from scratch. In addition, there was a lack of innovation, the forum was not expanded, although every possibility was open (phpbb). As I said, there were no posts that could have been destroyed by upgrades and extensions. Modern features, as we now know them from forums on the Internet, were never implemented. Even such simple things as user avatars, the inclusion of pictures and acknowledgements without having to write a comment were not available to the participants. None of this helped to create the necessary appeal. The forum went largely unnoticed by the participants.

On April 19, 2018, “I2P Forums” was closed and taken offline with reference to the “official forum” (quote *) that had been set up in the meantime.

(* I will only be able to submit the link after it has been checked, when the “official forum” is available again.)

The third and current forum is at the address i2pforum.i2p. In February 2018, the well-known I2P supporter, whom you know under the alias echelon, set up a phpbb forum and named it I2P Support Forum. This was also a forum run privately by an individual, and the operator leaves no doubt about that. You can find the summonable address at: https://i2pforum.net/app.php/aboutus.
To be clear, this forum is just as “official” as the I2P site geti2p.net. They are privately owned (and anyone who knows on which servers and their subsidiaries the western software is hosted is able to assign ownership). In fact, and in the absence of other facilities, it is seen as “official” by many participants.

The software theme is still blue and gray and the original structure has not changed much. This forum also started from scratch in terms of content. I don't think I need to dwell on the outward appearances for long here; today's participants will be able to see for themselves when they get the chance.
