I'd like to get an understanding of the infrastructure asept of I2P

Can you explain a little bit more about what kind of infrastructure actually supports it, are we talking datacenter clusters for the majority? VPN servers probably host a lot of the infrastructure. But what about anything else?

If you mean the supporting structure around the official I2P services then I think there isn't much really, probably just VPS's but you should ask echelon on IRC. I think he runs most of the I2P infrastructure.
If you want to run your own services you use a cheap VPS, maybe another VPS for a multi-homing setup if you want.
